First Lookout - 45 min return
Difficulty: demanding
Climb the Awausee for a bird's-eye view of Lake
Superior! This demanding trail starts at the base of Agawa Mountain and
follows an old logging road before veering uphill along a ravine. The
first lookout is found part way up the ravine and offers a view of the lower
Agawa River Valley and Agawa Mountain.
Continue upwards along the trail and climb through maple
forests to a series of lookouts. Find yourself standing 200 metres (650
feet) above
the Agawa Valley. This was a glacial spillway with a much larger river than
today. Upstream beyond view, the Agawa River Valley narrows to form the
Agawa Canyon (accessible only by the Algoma Central Railway).
Climb downwards and join up with the old logging road,
which takes you back to the trail's beginning.
